This week in phonics we are learning to read and spell words with the {-all} sound-- and we will be having a blast with ALL of these basebALL activities:
Baseballs are hanging from the ceiling! The kids will use them to read and "write" the room during literacy stations!
We are going to make baseball flip-the-letter booklets. These will help us to "chunk" sounds we know!
Batter up! The kids played an inning of the {-all} baseball game during guided reading groups today! Everyone did an amazing job reading the baseballs! Many of the teams were tied from making so many home runs! Woo hoo!
We will also play Baseball Cover Up, using spinners to create -all words, and to practice some of those beginning blends!
What else? We have been learning about characters! After talking and writing about some of our favorite book characters of all time, we created our own characters!
We have also been learning many cool facts about nocturnal animals, especially owls and bats. We wrote owl papers (many were one entire page FULL of information--what smarties!) and we created "Bat Mobiles" to show our learning about bats! {See the picture below.}
The rest of this week, we will begin learning about pumpkins! We will be graphing pumpkins, reading nonfiction and fiction pumpkin books, and doing a pumpkin "investigation"--the kids will weigh, measure, observe, and look inside of a real pumpkin! They will also estimate how many seeds they think are inside of the pumpkin, and then we will count them all up!
Many, many thanks to all of the parents who helped with and volunteered at the Fall Festival on Friday! It was so wonderful to see your smiling faces! We appreciate all that you do to support our fantastic school! Thanks to Leasa Holsombeck for coordinating our Glow Bracelet booth! It was a big success!
*P.S. Don't forget to send your first grader's "Spooky Snack" on Wednesday, October 31st! *
